Bread pakora Recipe
Bread Pakora is a popular Indian street food and comfort snack, especially enjoyed during rainy days and chilly evenings. These crispy, golden fritters are made by dipping bread slices (often stuffed with spiced potato filling) into a seasoned gram flour batter and deep-frying them to perfection. Whether served with tangy chutneys or a hot cup of chai, bread pakoras are always a crowd-pleaser!
Ingredients
For the Potato Filling (optional but recommended):
- 2 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed
- 1 green chili, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger, grated
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
- Salt to taste
- For the Batter:
- 1 cup gram flour (besan)
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ajwain (carom seeds)
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
- Other:
- 6 slices of bread (white or brown)
- Oil for deep frying
Preparation Steps
1. Prepare the Potato Filling:- In a bowl, combine mashed potatoes, green chili, ginger, red chili powder, turmeric, garam masala, coriander leaves, and salt.
- Mix well to form a uniform filling. Set aside.
- In another bowl, add gram flour, turmeric, red chili powder, ajwain, and salt.
- Gradually add water while whisking to make a thick, smooth batter (not too runny).
- Take a bread slice and spread a generous layer of the potato filling on it.
- Cover with another bread slice to make a sandwich. Press gently and cut diagonally to make two triangles. Repeat with remaining bread.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
- Dip each stuffed bread triangle into the batter, ensuring it's coated well on all sides.
- Carefully slide into the hot oil and fry until golden and crisp, turning occasionally.
- Remove on paper towels to drain excess oil
Serving Suggestions
- Serve hot with green chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup.
- Enjoy with a steaming cup of masala chai for a classic Indian snack experience.
Tips & Variations
- No Potato Filling? You can make plain bread pakoras by skipping the stuffing and just dipping bread slices in the batter.
- Add Cheese: Try adding a slice of cheese with the potato filling for a gooey, delicious twist!
- Spice Level: Adjust the green chili and red chili powder according to your taste.
- Healthier Option: Shallow fry or air-fry for a lighter version.
