Modak Recipe

 Modak is a beloved Indian sweet dumpling, especially prepared during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi as an offering to Lord Ganesha. Ingredients for Modak

  • 1 cup rice flour

      1. Prepare the Coconut-Jaggery Filling
    • Heat 1 tsp ghee in a non-stick pan.- Add the grated coconut and jaggery.- Stir well and cook on low flame until the jaggery melts and blends with the coconut.- Add cardamom powder and chopped nuts (if using).- Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring often, until the mixture thickens.- Set aside to cool.
    2 . Make the Rice Flour Dough

    - In a saucepan, bring 1 cup water, 1 tsp ghee, and a pinch of salt to a boil.
    - Reduce heat and add the rice flour gradually, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
    - Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes on low heat.
    - Transfer the mixture to a plate and knead into a soft, smooth dough while still warm.
    - Cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying.
  • 3. Shape and Fill the Modaks
    - Grease your palms with ghee.
    - Take a small portion of dough and roll into a ball.
    - Flatten it into a small disc, keeping the edges thinner than the center.
    - Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center.
    - Carefully pleat the edges and bring them together to seal at the top, forming a pointed tip.
    - Repeat for the remaining dough and filling.

  • 4. Steam the Modaks

     Arrange the shaped modaks in a greased steamer or on a banana leaf.
    - Steam for 10-12 minutes on medium heat, until they become glossy and cooked through.
    - Let them cool slightly and serve with a drizzle of ghee.
